In Russia, four-stroke diesel engines Cummins 2.8 with turbocharging and liquid cooling, with a capacity of 2.8 liters, are installed on Gazelle Business and Next cars. These engines have a simple and reliable fuel supply and perform well in operation. To reduce wear of parts, extend the life of the engine and delay the time of overhaul of Cummins 2.8 Gazelle engines, you need to undergo maintenance in accordance with the regulations provided by the manufacturer.

Maintenance
American Cummins engines are durable, but they are quite picky about the quality of consumables and fuels. It is not advisable to replace spare parts with non-original ones, and only high-quality diesel fuel should be used.
In Russian realities, it is better to change the oil every 7-10 thousand km, especially if the car is intensively used for short trips around the city. Many drivers simultaneously change the air, cabin and fuel filters to delay the repair of the Cummins 2.8 engine. This approach has only one drawback - additional financial costs. The advantages include increased engine life and no need to replace each filter separately.
Every 250 thousand km, injector cleaning is prescribed. This work is carried out in the service, as it requires specialized equipment. Disassembly and calibration of injectors is also done at the service stand.
Advantages of the power unit
The competitiveness of Cummins 2.8 is maintained at a decent level. The popularity of diesel engines in this series is explained by the following advantages:
- Manufacturers have improved the design of the motor and improved the design;
- the use of composite materials for the manufacture of the valve cover, pan and some other elements helps reduce noise and vibration levels during operation of the unit;
- easier access to the main components and mechanisms, made possible thanks to the modular structure of the engine, simplifies the repair process;
- the use of a catalytic exhaust gas converter helps the unit comply with Euro 4 standards.
From the above it follows that the Cummins 2.8 diesel engine is able to compete with gasoline engines from well-known manufacturers. For small business owners, this solution is optimal.
Overhaul of cummins engines (cummins) 2.8
A planned overhaul of the Cummins 2.8 engine is carried out after 500 thousand km, but sometimes a breakdown can happen earlier.
To carry out the work, the power plant is removed from the engine compartment and disassembled on a stand. After disassembly, the master assesses the condition of the parts and carries out troubleshooting. The cylinder block itself is bored and lined. The block head is completely sorted out and faults are rejected. The overhaul includes washing of components and parts.
The finished engine is assembled, first a cold run-in is carried out, and then a hot run-in. Sometimes assembled spare parts, such as a crankshaft, piston group or cylinder block, must be replaced. By the way, about 70% of spare parts for engines of the 2.8 and 3.8 series are identical.
Overhauling an engine is one of the most difficult service jobs, so the smart decision would be to entrust it to the specialists of AgregatAvto. Extensive experience in such work and professional equipment will allow service technicians to carry out repairs quickly and provide a guarantee on the work for 185 days.

Selection of Cummins spare parts
Due to the large number of modifications of engines of this brand, it is easy to get confused in the selection of Cummins spare parts. An incorrectly selected piston group or fuel equipment, even if normally installed on the engine, can lead to a sharp decrease in power, increased fuel consumption, increased vibration and smoke, which greatly affects the service life of the entire engine. The best option is original and non-original spare parts produced by Cummins
(USA),
CCEC
(China),
PAI
(USA),
IPD
(USA),
KMP

To identify the engine we use its 8-digit serial number (ESN). You can look at the ESN serial number in the equipment documents or directly on the motor (on the nameplate, which is located on the block or valve cover). Diesel cooling system for Cummins ISF 2.8 cars Gazelle Business
The engine cooling system of Cummins ISF 2.8 Gazelle Business cars is designed to maintain the engine operating temperature at the required level.
Some of the heat generated in the engine is absorbed by the coolant passing through passages in the block and cylinder head.
This heat is then removed from the coolant by the air as it passes through the radiator.
The coolant enters the water pump, located under the front timing gear cover and creates pressure in the cooling system of the Cummins ISF 2.8 engine. Then it enters the holes in the upper surface of the cylinder block and the cylinder head gasket.
They are made around each cylinder and between the cylinders. The coolant enters the cylinder head, flowing around the valve bridge and the injector installation locations.
It then passes to the exhaust ports in the cylinder head, through the OEM connections, and into the thermostat housing.
Until the engine warms up to the opening temperature of the thermostat, coolant is supplied through the bypass pipe to the inlet of the water pump.
As soon as the engine warms up to the opening temperature of the thermostat, it will open and coolant will begin to flow through the radiator. In this case, the bypass channel through which it gets to the water pump will be blocked.

Engine water pump Cummins ISF 2.8
The Cummins 2.8 Gazelle Business engine is equipped with a centrifugal water pump with a belt drive; its inlet and bypass pipes are an integral part of the front timing gear cover.
It is not practical to replace individual parts of the water pump since it is serviced as a single unit.
Check for signs of persistent leakage at the water pump drain hole.
Work to replace the water pump of a Cummins ISF 2.8 engine:
— Drain the coolant.
— Remove the cooling fan belt.
- Remove the 8 mounting bolts and water pump from the front half of the engine.
— Check the water pump impeller for nicks or damaged blades.
— Check the water pump seal for cuts or other damage that could cause the water pump to leak.
— If the water pump impeller or seal is damaged, it must be replaced.
— Make sure the mounting surfaces of the Cummins ISF 2.8 engine water pump are clean.
— Install the water pump and mounting bolts.
— Tighten the bolts evenly.
— Install the cooling fan belt.
— Pour liquid into the cooling system.
— Start the engine and check for leaks.
Engine cooling system thermostat Cummins ISF 2.8
The thermostat controls the temperature of the engine coolant. When it is below the operating level, the coolant is bypassed to the water pump inlet.
When the coolant temperature reaches operating levels, the thermostat opens, closing the bypass passage and forcing engine coolant to flow into the radiator or heat exchanger.
An error in selecting a thermostat or its malfunction can result in the Cummins ISF 2.8 engine operating at too low or too high a coolant temperature.
