The frame number on a GAZelle may be needed when re-registering the car with the traffic police. Where to look for the necessary markings?

The official operating manuals indicate: the number is written on the right side member of the frame, next to the front spring bracket. However, is everything so simple?

On GAZ vehicles of the 2507 series produced since December 1995, the number is located on the side member to the right of the engine, behind the cylinder. However, on cars until 2000, the markings were applied to the frame with white paint using a stencil; after a few years, they either disappeared or were painted over. Occasionally, this part of the body would become corroded, primed, and the sign would disappear.

According to the rules for maintaining factory documentation, the number must be entered in the vehicle passport; when re-registering with the traffic police, it may be required. It is likely that the designation of the frame in the PTS is actually confused with the designation of the body (“tin can”), and it is unreasonable to indicate it in the “frame” section. A few owners of GAZelles of early production covered the sign with anti-corrosion paint, protecting the marking. What to do if the factory frame markings are not readable? There are several options for the development of events.

Try to explain to the traffic police officer that the frame in GAZelles 2507 and 3302 is not a numbered part. Model 2507 has a numbered body and cab, while GAZ 3302 has a body.

The frame number indicated in the passport is most likely a marking of one of these parts. If the problem is understood, the car will be inspected “after the fact”: the engine markings, cabin number and plate on the body will be checked.

If all the data matches, the car will be registered, and a non-numbered (no number) mark will be placed in the “frame” column.

The option is the same, but you will have to write a statement to the traffic police and indicate that the data entered in the “frame” column is incorrect and unreasonable. In the future, after receiving a visa from the authorities, the car will be inspected “after the fact” and all changes to the vehicle’s markings will be entered in the “documents” column.

The absence of a sign can greatly fray your nerves during the re-registration procedure and seriously delay it.
