Design of the Champion ST556 snow blower:

  • A four-stroke gasoline engine drives the wheels of the machine and the working parts of the snowplow;
  • Bucket: Located at the front of the snow blower. The width and height of the snow cover depends on its capacity;
  • Auger: located in the bucket of the machine, when it moves, it captures snow, crushes it and sends it to the outlet chute;
  • Gutter: made of metal or durable plastic, designed to regulate the angle and distance of snow throw;
  • Controls: designed to maneuver the snow blower, regulate the direction of the snow throw range;
  • Wheels: for greater cross-country ability, they are equipped with tires with an aggressive self-cleaning tread.

Instructions before starting the Champion ST556 snow blower for the first time:

  • You are dealing with a rather complex technical device, so carefully study the operating manual and safety rules when working with snow removal machines;
  • Assemble the snow blower in accordance with the instructions;
  • Fuel and fill the crankcase with oil.

Review of tips for maintaining and operating the Champion ST556 snow blower

Owner reviews

Anatoly Krivonosov, 43 years old, Altai:

“I have about 70 meters from the garage to the roadway. Agree - cleaning by hand is time-consuming and difficult. Therefore, I began to look for a budget snow blower model. I chose Champion st556 and I don’t regret it. Despite its light weight, the unit does an excellent job of removing even stale snow. Now, when clearing the path, instead of fatigue I get positive emotions. Excellent device."

Yuri Silin, 48 years old, Volgograd region:

“Three years ago, I had a bad back pain in the winter, there was snow up to the roof, there was some kind of North Pole in the yard, and I couldn’t even make a path. That's when I decided to buy a snow blower. I liked the Champion st556 model because of its dimensions, weight and maneuverability. It copes with its tasks perfectly. There were no serious breakdowns – I only spent money on consumables.”

Maxim Rogovtsev, 32 years old, Novgorod:

“I’ve had this car for the fifth season now. All this time it serves faithfully. Champion did not have any serious breakdowns. I changed the belt twice, in addition, last season the gearbox gear fell off - it is made of soft metal. But the fifth season after all. What's bad is that there are no keys for the auger in stores; I had to replace them with bolts - and the manufacturer does not advise doing this. Advantages: price, engine, performance. Disadvantages: there is a problem with original spare parts in the region.”

Snow blower Champion ST556

With the arrival of winter, many owners of cottages and country houses (as well as village residents, owners of small shops and organizations) are thinking about purchasing a compact automated device for clearing small areas of snow. The emphasis is placed precisely on the compactness of the unit and its maneuverability.

The ideal solution in such a situation would be the Champion ST556 self-propelled gasoline snow blower. The manufacturer of this snow removal equipment is the American company Champion, which has production facilities in China.

The Chinese assembly of snow throwers is distinguished by American quality and high reliability.

Description

The Champion ST556 snow blower is equipped with a four-stroke single-cylinder engine (5.5 hp) with air cooling function. It is thanks to the ability to cool the engine that the snow blower can be operated for several hours in a row without fear of the motor overheating.

The engine is started manually using a special handle. The ST556 champion is equipped with six gears, four of which are forward and two are rear. Compact dimensions, low weight (62.5 kg) and powerful tire treads make it indispensable in confined spaces and hard-to-reach places.

The Champion snow blower removes any type of snow:

The auger blades with serrations make it possible to easily blast snow of any density and level and clear the area in a matter of minutes. The snow throw range of this snow blower model is up to 15 meters.

Before starting to operate the snow thrower, it is necessary to thoroughly study its structure - all the main components, systems, fasteners and working surfaces.

Do not forget to study the safety rules for working with a snow blower, because inept handling of the unit can lead to injury and become a threat to the life of the operator.

The ideal fuel option for the Champion ST556 is 92 octane gasoline.

To ensure long-term proper operation of the Champion snow blower, it is necessary to carefully monitor the level and quality of oil in the crankcase and fuel, the condition of the air filter, spark plugs, mounting bolts, etc.

Owner reviews

Vladimir Kuzmich, 49 years old:

“I bought this “Chinese” two years ago. I was seduced by its compactness and price. During two years of operation there were no problems. I was captivated by the efficiency of the snowplow and its all-terrain capability (powerful protectors, obedient control). I have a plot of 25 acres, I had to spend a day off manually clearing it of snow, now with the help of Champion this procedure lasts from 2.5 to 3 hours (depending on the density and height of the snow). I take care of the “Chinese” like a little child, and accordingly the output comes out of conservation without problems, from the first factory. But headlights wouldn't hurt! In winter, daylight hours are short, you often have to work in the dark, and you have to play tricks with lighting. Good snow blower, no complaints.”

Dmitry Alekseevich, 57 years old:

"Hello. I would like to make my contribution, so to speak, to confirm that the Champion snow removal machine really deserves attention and is one hundred percent worth its cost. My Champion has been plowing for 4 years and serving not only my yard, but the entire street. Easy running without slipping, bucket lift, 6 speeds (4+2) and economical fuel consumption are what I can highlight as advantages. Owners of gasoline cars will certainly appreciate the fact that Champion also consumes high-quality 92 gasoline (no need to spend extra money on it). Over the entire period of operation, I changed the magneto once (no luck) and replaced the shear bolt a couple of times. I save myself from ice on the auger using a hair dryer, but this is a problem with any snowblower. The lack of a headlight doesn’t bother me; my area is well lit from all sides.”

Reviews about Champion ST556

Advantages: Price. For my territory up to 150 m, that’s it.

Disadvantages: Low power. It’s hard to remove snow that has fallen from the roof - you have to help.

Comment: I spent a long time planning this purchase. I chose this model for the price-quality ratio. It starts with half a turn, no problems so far. I can recommend it for use in small areas where there are problems with the throwing area. The area is clean in 30 minutes, instead of 2 hours with a shovel. Everything is much simpler and easier. I recommend it to those who already use a dishwasher, robot vacuum cleaner, etc. A lot of time is freed up for a more enjoyable pastime.

Advantages: Value for money, good build quality, reliability in operation

Disadvantages: Slow reverse speed

Comment: I bought it based on my financial capabilities. But the snow blower worked out the season with a bang. Removed snow up to 40 cm, stale, damp, clods, etc. Not a single problem during the season. Once in the middle of winter I adjusted the auger drive cable, and that was it. I did the T.O. in the summer, I didn’t find a single unscrewed bolt, and I was also pleasantly surprised at the well-lubricated components. I recommend this very high quality unit to everyone.

Advantages: Price. Bought for 19800 on promotion in October 2020. Easy to start. External design looks good. It removes dry snow (falling at sub-zero temperatures) well. It is good to clean on long straight sections.

Disadvantages: There are a lot of disadvantages and they are especially pronounced when clearing snow at temperatures from 0 and above: 1. Control is extremely inconvenient. The activation of the auger and the drive are on the same handle and when it is necessary to stop the move, you release the auger control lever, the snow is not completely thrown out and this can cause the ejection chute to become clogged with snow; 2. Auger drive belt. It breaks down very quickly. “Native” began to slip after 1 hour of operation, the ejection force weakened, the chute became clogged after 1-2 minutes. I tightened it as far as the adjustment allows, after 1-2 hours the same thing happened. I had to additionally pull the cable with one hand and at the same time squeeze the control lever with the other. By the first maintenance (5 engine hours) it was practically not throwing snow. I didn’t take it to the service center; it probably took 1-2 weeks for the repair to be done and I decided to replace it myself. Original belt in the online store 1000-1500 rubles. + delivery 7 days. Picked up father. GOST analogue (made in China) for 40 rubles. This belt lasted for 1.5-2 hours (temperature was 0- +1), but it failed with the same symptoms. 3. The gutter visor, which sets the direction of ejection, stopped locking after an hour of operation, apparently the threads on the bolts were cut off. 4. It doesn’t cut well into compacted snow, or rather not compacted snow, but one that has just fallen from the roof and is compressed as a result. Moreover, when “stepping” on a pile of such snow, the shear bolts of the auger broke 2 times, each of which costs 100 rubles in a special store. 5. Very light, slips. Therefore, you often have to put extra pressure on him. 6. Very slow reverse gears, you don’t engage them and drag it on yourself. 7. Poorly selected forward speeds, it would be better to make the 1st slower and the 4th faster

After such cleaning, you think that it is easier and physically less expensive to clean with a shovel, which I do more and more often.

Comment: I decided to add a review after the February and March snowfalls. Since the weather was frosty and the snow was light, the snow blower did its job perfectly. I somehow got used to the shortcomings described in the previous review and improved something: 1. Installed a clamp on the handle to secure the auger activation lever. 2. I replaced the auger drive belt with a higher quality Indian one, it worked for about 5 hours. Now I purchased and installed the Indian one again for 100 rubles. (the quality seems to be better). Replacing the belt already takes 5-10 minutes. I think the drive would be more reliable if there were a pair of belts. 3. I secured the gutter visor by making a “washer” with a loop of knitting wire. Fixes perfectly. Very good for cleaning long straight sections. I cleaned the street for about 300m and spent no more than an hour. The most positive impressions. Now I think it’s still a useful acquisition.

Review

Sergey S., Lviv

Last year we were building a house, and it was necessary to provide access for heavy equipment (tractors, excavators) from the rear side of the site. The area was abandoned, tall weeds grew there, the snow was compacted and covered with several layers of ice. We decided to buy a Champion ST556 to clear this area and subsequently use a snow blower to clear the driveway to the house and the yard itself. The machine coped with its task “excellently”: the weeds and branches were crushed by the auger along with the snow and flew out in the form of dust. Champion took packed snow and ice in a couple of passes. The machine easily removes freshly fallen snow in first gear, raking in a full bucket. A large area of 27 acres was completely cleared in 3.5 hours. This is our second winter using Champion, and we are quite satisfied. The equipment is durable, consumes little gasoline, and does not break down. The only thing the new owner needs to know is that stones and cones (if there are any on the site) will fly out of the gutter at breakneck speed, so you need to be careful when working.

Features of the device and operation

  1. The snow blower is equipped with a compact 5.5-horsepower engine, which demonstrates good efficiency and environmental friendliness. Its potential is sufficient to smoothly operate all working parts of the machine, including the wheeled chassis
  2. The machine received a metal casing into which the working element was built. The width of the casing is sufficient to capture snow over a large width. It increases labor productivity
  3. The Champion ST556 snow blower is equipped with a metal chute, which is designed to direct the snow in the desired direction, specified by the user. In addition, the chute allows you to adjust the distance of snow throw.
  4. The main working part of the ST556 model, like any other snow blower, is the auger. This integral component is responsible for capturing snow and crushing it. After this, the snow is thrown out through the outlet chute and thrown to the side or forward. Please note that the snow is thrown further forward than if it is thrown to the side at an angle of 90 degrees.
  5. In addition to the auger, we note another auxiliary working body - a rotor mechanism, which is a wheel with blades installed at the inlet of the outlet chute. The rotor performs a rotational function. The faster the rotation speed, the faster the snow is thrown out, and the higher the productivity.
  6. The Champion ST556 snow blower is equipped with a two-wheeled chassis. Each wheel has a standard metal rim and a deep tread rubber tire. We note the high adhesion properties of the wheel with much coating, as well as the prevention of wheel slipping.
  7. The snow blower has ergonomic, customizable handles that can be adjusted to suit your height. The handles make it convenient to direct the snow blower in the desired direction and perform turns and turns.
  8. The ST556 model is equipped with a dashboard with a minimal set of functions. All switches, buttons and levers are located ergonomically and are within easy reach.
  9. Ease of operation is one of the key advantages of this snow blower. The same goes for ease of service. But, as practice shows, problems arise during the first service - both for beginners and experienced owners. In particular, users have questions about motor maintenance. Let's consider a few points regarding this process:
  • When servicing the internal combustion engine for the first time, it is recommended to set the snow blower in a horizontal position, then unscrew the oil filler neck and check the oil level. This procedure is usually relevant for all four-stroke engines. If necessary, drain the used oil and fill in new fluid, or simply add the missing amount.
  • Another important and simple procedure is replacing the spark plug. This procedure is performed quite often. We unscrew the old spark plug and screw on the new product according to the instructions. This is described in detail in the user manual.
  • The machine uses a manual starter. To check its functionality, pull it until the starter starts to spin. The engine should work
  • Every snow blower owner should be able to measure compression. To do this, you will need a special device - a compression meter. It is believed that the optimal compression in the system should be 9-12 atmospheres. If this indicator is lower, then perhaps the piston rings have not yet worn in sufficiently. This is understandable, because the engine is new. However, in this case, you will need to replace the compression again, but after 10 hours of continuous operation of the engine at idle.
  • So, after ten hours we turn off the engine and measure the compression again. If its value is still below 9 atmospheres, then there really is a problem. Since the motor is new and is under warranty, in this case it is better to replace it with another internal combustion engine. If you leave everything as is, and the engine continues to produce compression less than 9 atmospheres, the engine will experience overload due to insufficient power. Due to low compression, real power will not correspond to factory figures.

User manual

Before working with any Champion snow blower model, you need to study its design, main components and mechanisms. All descriptions and diagrams are described in detail and shown in the instructions. The step-by-step sequence of assembling the unit is also indicated there.

When studying the instructions, in addition to the design of the snow blower, it is necessary to study other sections.

Important sections of the instructions:

  • Safety precautions.
  • First engine start.

  • Snow blower malfunctions, their causes and troubleshooting methods.

For proper operation of the unit, it is important to know what kind of oil to pour into the engine of a Champion snow blower (brand), how to change the oil in a Champion snow blower.

All descriptions and much more are available in the operating instructions for the device, which is necessarily included with each snow blower.

Snow blower CHAMPION ST556 - a small champion for cleaning yards

A snow clearing machine called CHAMPION ST556 is good for cleaning small areas around the house. It is compact and lightweight, consumes very little gasoline, while processing quite a decent swath (56 centimeters).

Snow blower Champion ST556

The Champion brand is Chinese, dating back not so long ago, since 2005. Areas of activity: production of power and gardening equipment, both amateur and professional. The product quality is quite decent. Combined with low prices and a large selection of spare parts and accessories, this makes the products of this brand in demand in the domestic market.

The Champion ST556 model is self-propelled, it runs on two wheels with convex treads. The wheelset is driven by a proprietary 5.5 horsepower gasoline engine. The bucket that scoops up the snow, as well as the auger that crushes the snow mass, are made of metal. There are plastic skids at the bottom that protect the surface being removed (for example, tiles) from damage and allow the bucket to glide better.

Design and operating features

The four-stroke engine, powered by gasoline, has valves located at the top, making it easier to start in severe cold. A cable is used for starting; there is no electric starter. The single cylinder of the motor is cooled by air, and rotation is transmitted to the augers via a six-speed drive. The car can go forward with four speeds, and backward with two. When working with wet or frozen snow, it is recommended to move more slowly to avoid damaging the device.

Plastic skids located at the bottom of the bucket are adjustable in height by tightening with nuts. On a smooth surface they are installed lower, on a bumpy surface - higher (so as not to accidentally pile up stones with snow). The augers, equipped with notches for better gripping of snow, are fixed on the shaft with special shear bolts that protect them from damage in emergency situations (for example, if a stone hits). If something happens, an easily replaceable cheap bolt will be cut off, but the auger will remain intact.

Photo of the Champion ST556 snow blower After the augers, the snow mass is picked up by the impeller, from where it moves to the outlet chute. Then it flies out in the direction that the operator set with the lever. The rotation of the chute (from 0 to 190 degrees) is carried out by a worm gear, which requires periodic lubrication. And with the help of a special knob on the outlet chute you can change the distance at which the snow flies out.

At the front of the unit there is a handle on which a lever is attached that turns on the auger. Nearby is the drive switch. At the bottom of the handle, on the right hand you can see a lever that changes gears, and on the left hand you can see a lever for turning the output chute. Before starting work, you need to set the desired speed and the desired slope of the ejection chute.

In order for the auger to start rotating, you need to press and hold the auger control lever in this position. After this, you should squeeze the clutch and the car will start moving. To stop it, the clutch lever is released completely. When you need to change the speed of movement, this lever should also be released first.

Main technical characteristics of Champion equipment

Almost all models of Champion snowplows have combined starting systems and are very simple and easy to operate. Every second model presented in the series throws snow up to a distance of 15 m. The products are also capable of changing the direction of the chute, which throws away the collected snow by turning the handle 190 degrees.

Advantages of the technique:

  • engine reliability (electric or gasoline engine, depending on the model);
  • manual or electric starter to start the engine of a certain model;
  • super-reliable screw mechanism;
  • system for collecting and processing snow masses (can have 1 or 2 stages);
  • tracked mechanism or wide wheels, which makes the equipment incredibly maneuverable;
  • the ability to move at one or several speeds depending on the type of gearbox;
  • wide range of snow blowers;
  • affordable price combined with unsurpassed quality.
